The performance was a result of two years of dedicated preparation, incorporating 33 distinct elements of intangible folk culture.
The 24 Solar Terms
The 24 Solar Terms, a traditional system in Chinese calendar, divides the year into 24 distinct periods. This ancient schedule, formulated by observing the sun's annual motion, serves as a guide to China’s agricultural practices and daily life. Originating over 2,000 years ago, these solar terms remain relevant today, influencing farming, cultural ceremonies, health practices and even arts and crafts.
Performance Characteristics
In "Dance of 24 Solar Terms," these solar terms are not merely a temporal framework but a reflection of the intricate relationship between the Miao people and their environment. Each term highlights various aspects of Miao culture and heritage, with specific emphasis on their festivals and traditional practices.
The dance drama refines six significant solar terms that correlate with Miao festivals: Winter Solstice, Start of Spring, Awakening of Insects, Summer Solstice, Major Heat and Start of Autumn. These terms are intricately woven into the narrative, each representing a specific time of year that holds cultural significance for the Miao community.
Choreography
The choreography of the dance show is a testament to the skill and creativity of its director, Li Shibo, a national-level choreographer. The dance movements are designed to be evocative, capturing the essence of each solar term and the accompanying Miao celebrations. Choreography plays a crucial role in conveying the dynamic energy and emotional depth of the Miao people's cultural narratives. The involvement of twelve representative inheritors of intangible cultural heritage from Xiangxi Tujia and Miao autonomous prefecture adds authenticity and depth to the performance, ensuring that traditional elements are preserved and showcased with artistic integrity.
Music and Costume
Traditional Miao music forms an integral part of the performance, using indigenous instruments and melodies that resonate with the audience and accentuate the themes of the dance. The costumes, vibrant and meticulously crafted, reflect the cultural richness and aesthetic sensibilities of the Miao people. Each costume is designed to complement the narrative of the dance, with colors and patterns that signify the various solar terms and the associated cultural practices. These elements collectively contribute to a performance that is both a sensory delight and a profound cultural exploration.
